Yet, the legendary ‘Gol da Rua Javari’ was never caught on film. We worked alongside historians, sports journalists, football legends, and Pelé’s family to reconstruct this lost moment and share it with the world. This project was created in full partnership with the Pelé Brand, the official managers of the Pelé estate. Rooted in education and cultural preservation, the project heads to the Pelé Museum this year. To achieve this, teams from Google DeepMind used models like Gemini Omni and Veo to transform historical fragments into moving imagery, filmed on the original pitch with authentic uniforms and a vintage ball. By making the memory of this goal more accessible, it stands as a tribute to inspire a new generation of fans during the first World Cup without him. The goal is on display at the Museu Pelé in Santos, Brazil. Gooooal! Pelé was meant to be immortal. He had an unbelievable connection with the ball. Pelé is a genius, you know? The greatest player in football history. [Pelé speaking] It was against Juventus, at their stadium on Rua Javari. Without a doubt, the most beautiful one. If Pelé chooses that one out of a thousand, then it's a special goal. If he said it was his most beautiful one, you can't argue with him. You have to be a genius to come up with such a spectacular play. All we have is a photo of Pelé's header. The rest is description and imagination. What if we could reconstruct what Pelé himself considered his most beautiful goal? Being able to experience this goal with all this technology is sensational... for the future generations, so they don't forget. It can't be forgotten. It would be an eternal tribute to him, and Brazil deserves it. He used to say that a good game was a game with goals. He cared deeply about scoring, about bringing joy to the people. And no matter who was in the crowd that day, everyone experienced it. Each person saw it through their own eyes, but their accounts match up perfectly. Right at this goalpost. -This one? -Yes. That was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful goals he ever scored. One sombrero is hard enough. Pulling off two, even harder. Three, and a fourth on the goalkeeper? Without the ball ever touching the ground. Exactly. It's like I can see the goal. [Eyewitnesses speaking] A sequence of unexpected plays. Jair had the ball he passed it to Dorval Dorval pushed forward. Here he crossed it to Pelé Pelé got ahead of the defender. Flicked it over Homero. Clóvis came in, flicked it over him. He flicked it over Julinho too and was face to face with Mão de Onça You can see that here he already pulled off the third sombrero And scored the goal. Was this filmed? There was no footage. Videotape arrived in Brazil between '61 and '62 there's no consensus among researchers. This goal happened on August 2, 1959. There was no TV broadcast. There was no live streaming and no videotape. Only a reporter who took a few photographs. An incredible sequence shows part of the play and the moment of celebration We rarely refer to a goal such a specific moment, as a historical fact. Usually, it's the match, the championship. It's hard for us to imagine now that not every moment of a sporting event was filmed by a million cameras. How do we bring these moments that weren't captured on film to life? To reconstruct the story of this goal, we had to travel back to 1959, combining research and artificial intelligence. We wanted to bring this goal to life in a way that had never been done before. And that's always a nerve-wracking moment and that's the excitement. That's why we're doing innovative stuff. There are multiple technical challenges to getting there. Period accuracy is everything because the little details that matter the most to recreate something so special. How did people dress for the stadium? What did they look like? How was the Mooca neighborhood at that time? With Gemini Omni, we can take historical images combine all those ingredients and produce an image. I would say it's a pretty successful test. It's a big responsibility to reconstruct a moment of Pelé's history. We want to make sure that we're telling a story in a way that respects and honors his legacy. To really convey how magical that goal was, you need to reproduce the action as closely as possible. We worked with local actors and film crew to recreate the goal. The key part of that is this Performance Control Model. You're probably familiar with motion capture, where people wear these suits and they have, like all the dots on and everything like that, right? So we're kind of doing that without having to put on the fancy suit. We take the input video, and then there's a model that produces these 3D blue-mesh renderings of the people. And then our model was trained to use that to transfer the motion. It just unlocks so many things. When you're using Gemini Omni to recreate a historical moment you want to make sure that everything is true to what actually happened. We needed to recreate the same conditions he had at the moment of the play In the same pitch, with the same uniforms and the same ball. At the time, soccer balls were made out of leather. They were significantly heavier. When you add water to leather, it absorbs it and it gets even heavier. This ball was heavy. Scoring a goal by flicking the ball over one defender is already hard. Can you imagine doing that against three opponents? It's this beautiful collaboration between these athletic performers, the soccer team, and the technology. All these Al tools, they're such amplifiers of our imagination. It allows us to really explore and experiment in a way that we just never have been able to. It's really important that we're responsible stewards of it and that we, through our actions, that we help define the standards. One of the most important goals that we had was to bring Pelé's legacy to a new generation of people. We're really excited that more people who have never been exposed to it before are going to realize what makes Pelé so special. That August 2nd was a Sunday I will never forget. It had rained earlier that day. The stadium was packed. The rooftops were full of people. It's estimated that 10,000 people were at Javari. The fans were rooting against Santos. Whenever Pelé touched the ball, he was booed. It was a kind of motivation for us. Let them boo, we'll answer with goals! And he'd say: wait, wait... Wait, you'll get yours. Then, at the 42nd minute of the second half, the ball was with Jair, he passed to Dorval on the right wing. Dorval moved forward. Spotted Pelé. He was at the penalty arc. Pelé in the middle! He makes his final sprint! Here's a perfect cross, right at the edge of the box. Pelé got ahead of Homero and flicked the ball around him! Clóvis came... He flicked it over Clóvis. ... he is lobbed with majesty! Julinho came... He lobs Julinho too, It's breathtaking! Mão de Onça dove for the ball. He leaves Mão de Onça grasping at thin air! He flew past and crashed right into the mud And Pelé, with his head... He's going to score... And he scored the most beautiful goal I've ever seen. GOOOOOAL! Goal for Santos! This is surreal. You can feel the emotion. It's wild. Cross into the box, Pelé controls it. Slips it past Homero! He flicks the ball over Clóvis... what a play! Leaves Mão de Onça grasping at thin air! GOOOOOAL! I've never seen anything like this... never. The standing ovation kept going and going. It was a goal that really made it's mark and will never disappear from the history of football. What he did, nobody else will ever do. That was only Pelé. A goal that is impossible to believe. A play to keep always in our memories. Three minutes later, the game ended. Everyone from Juventus ran to hug Pelé. The referee, the linesmen... Everyone ran to hug Pelé. For those who love football, it doesn't matter if it was against your team or not. it's about witnessing an amazing moment, that traveled the whole world. He did all that, and he wasn't even 20 years old. Imagine what he would do next. The joy of football is deeply connected to Brazil, So l believe that Pelé, with that goal, illuminated that rainy Sunday and transformed it into a historic day. He would be so, so proud to see all this happening. I'm sure He lives on through us. We carry on what he left behind. Helping people see and experience... ... not just those who were there at Rua Javari, but now we all can see that goal too... it's sensational He faced every challenge to become the greatest player of all time. This goal will inspire this generation and many others. And those who were at Javari, who were 10,000 at most, became 200,000, now they are millions in Brazil and worldwide who can now watch this goal with their own eyes and yet think... it's truly unbelievable.3c:T87a,On August 2, 1959, Pelé scored the most beautiful goal of his career: three consecutive “sombreros” without the ball touching the ground.
