A connectomics milestone: Mapping the complete male fruit fly brain

We present a whole adult male Drosophila melanogaster brain imaged and reconstructed at synaptic resolution. This dataset contains complete neuron morphologies and all synaptic connectivity for the right half of the central brain and both optic lobes, comprising approximately 3.5 million presynaptic sites and 130,000 neurons. We describe the imaging, segmentation, reconstruction, proofreading and initial analyses used to produce the reconstruction and make the data and tools available to the community to accelerate research in neuroscience, machine learning, and computational biology.
